It has been suggested that the decrease in interest among major mental health organizations in providing services to sexual minorities who were distressed by their experience of same-sex attraction led in some ways to the growth of religion-based ministries. These ministries vary considerably in what they provide, how they provide it, what their goals are and so on.

At some point in advanced informed consent it is also important to review the possible risks and benefits of treatment. Here is language that may be helpful to the Christian counselor:

Clinician: Another area I want to discuss with you are the possible benefits and risks of this program. I will work with you to help expand alternatives to what you are doing and experiencing today. In keeping with this model, you may experience greater emotional stability insofar as how you live and form your identity reflects the beliefs and values you hold about how you want to live. Of course, you may also decide to live out your values in ways that are difficult for you, and that may be hard for us to predict, but we can certainly discuss it throughout our work together. The risks are primarily financial and emotional. It is expensive to be in counseling, and you may have to pay for some or all of your counseling out of pocket. Emotional risks are tied to goals and expectations for counseling, which we will discuss in greater detail. But if you were working toward congruence—so that how you live and identify yourself is consistent with your beliefs and values—you might also hold out expectations about your sexuality, your attractions, your behaviors and so on. Those other expectations may or may not be met, and when we hold expectations that are not met, we can feel discouraged or frustrated in ways that we might not have anticipated.
